Hello CU English majors -

You’ll be getting an email from me with official information about this change, but I wanted to let you all know that as of August 17th, I am no longer working as an advisor in the department of English at CU.  I have accepted a full-time position as advisor for the Spanish and Portuguese, Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures departments.

I am sorry my time with all of you was so short, and I hope that you feel confident in your academic path so far.  I am still around on campus and will get to continue working with those of you whose second majors are Spanish, German or Russian.  I would still love to keep in touch and welcome visit in my new office in McKenna 236.

All the best!

Jennifer

Hello English majors!

I am back on campus after some time away during July.  My hours during August will be sporadic during the first couple weeks of the month, so please send me an email at j.stewart@colorado.edu if you would like to schedule an appointment.

I will open my calendar for regular appointment times the week before classes begin, but in the meantime, the best way to see me is to schedule via email.

Intro to Literary Theory

English 2010-581

Offered Online

June 1-July 17, 2009

The course “meets” every weekday from June 1 to July 17. You do not have to log on at a specific time of day, but you’ll be required to post responses to the readings—and to your classmates—on a regular basis. You do not have to be on-campus, or even in Colorado, to take this course. Covers the same material as Engl 2010 offered during the regular semester.

This online course satisfies the Literary Theory requirement for English majors. Register for Engl 2010-581 through Continuing Education, Independent Learning Office (303-492-5148).

Course Repetition Program Ending

On March 5, 2009, the Boulder Faculty Assembly voted to eliminate the
Course Repetition program on the Boulder Campus. Students will be able
to repeat courses under the course repetition program only through the
summer semester of 2010. Beginning in the fall of 2010, all grades will
be employed to calculate the grade point average, including any courses
which are repeated.

Students can register for course repetition through the summer semester
of 2010 when they register for courses, or by completing the application
in CUConnect starting on the first day of classes. It is located under
the “Academics and Research” tab. For more information on who can
qualify to repeat courses through the course repetition program, go to

English 2030: Introduction to Digital Media
MWF Atlas 1B25 9:00am – 9:50am
Professor Lori Emerson

Course Description:
While it is becoming ever-more common for undergraduates to be called “digital natives,” it is clear that not all are not literate-let alone fluent-in the use and critique of digital media that permeate their everyday lives. Furthermore, it is also all too apparent to us that the very notion of “textuality” and “literary studies” has already been transformed by digital media. This course will, then, serve as a humanities-based introduction to digital media structures such as the digital archive and reading/writing software that fundamentally affects what we ourselves are able to read/write; theories and methodologies for under-taking digital media scholarship in the humanities; and, finally, digital textualities ranging from text messaging, blogging, and games to digital fiction and poetry. This course will give students the critical skills they themselves recognize they need to understand and navigate a 21st century world in which digital media govern the storage, transmission and reception of a whole range of textual material. In short, then, English 2030 will give a broad survey of what digital media can do in the area of language-based (or language-involving) art, covering the major genres and it will offer a range of critical perspectives on new media technology.
